MotoGP Round.5: Grand Prix of Catalunya (01/06/12 - 03/06/12, Catalunya Circuit

The Catalunya Grand Prix presented at the Catalunya circuit in the suburb of Barcelona, Spain's second capital. The circuit is pretty close to the city center therefore fans surge to the Montmelo circuit. The circuit consists of two long straights taken at high speed and many high speed / middle-low

speed corners. So riders and teams requirea well-balanced set up. Riders are able to overtake at each of the corners by using the breaking control at this wide track. There are rest points at the two long straights. On the contrary, it is important to quickly decollate at the straight end and the controllability at each of the corners. In other words, the difficulty of the track is high therefore the breaks require highest performance overall.

The race weekend has held under high temperature conditions between the free practices on Friday and the qualifying session on Saturday. The race day started with a drizzle in the morning but the races was held in dry conditions.

The 25 lap MotoGP race started at 14:00 p.m local time. Alvaro Bautista(San Carlo Honda Gresini/HONDA)had a successful start after starting from 10th position and managed a stable run keeping his pace. Bautista finished in 6th position. Stefan Bradl followed the top group in the early laps and showed again his high potential. Bradl stayed concentrated until the end of the race even if he was racing on his own in the middle of race, he finished in 8th position. Michele Pirro (San Calro Honda Gresini FTR-Honda) finished in 14th position (2nd position of the CRT category) and was able to gain more points.

In the Moto2 class, Xavier Simeon(Tech 3 Racing/TECH3)was unable to participate in the race due to his crash during the qualifying at the Grand Prix of France. Jordi Torres(Tech 3 Racing/TECH3)went in for Simeon's place. Torres finished in 11th position at the qualifying session and finished   the race  in 16th position.

In the Moto3 class, Niccolo Antonelli(San Carlo Gresini Moto3/FTR HONDA) started from 10th position on the grid but then fell backt to 27th position. Alvaro Bautista-San Carlo Honda Gresini-6th

“It is a shame that I didn't get a perfect start. It's bad enough being on the third row but I managed to lose positions from there and had a tough battle to recover, especially with Valentino. The most pleasing thing about the fight with Rossi was that I passed him in the same place he passed Lorenzo for the win in 2009. Unfortunately the guys at the front had got too far ahead and by the time I was lapping at the same pace as them the tyres were dropping off and I couldn't catch them. Next time we have to try hard to get a better position on the grid and make a better start but for now I am satisfied. It's the same result as Jerez and Estoril but with a much smaller gap to the podium and now we have the opportunity to build on it in the test tomorrow.”

Stefan Bradl-LCR Honda-8th

“In the first part of the race I could follow the top riders and I was very aggressive. But as soon as the tyres started to work properly we had some issue and it started spinning too much. We were on the hard tyre considering the last two days track temperature while the most of the guys in front were on the soft ones. Unfortunately the spinning started very early because we did not have enough edge grip compared to the other riders and we were also expecting to have more dry grip but at the end it was not there. I am a bit frustrated because my potential and the bike package were there but we could not use the tyre correctly. Eight position is still okay and in tomorrow’s testing day we are looking forward to improve the bike for future races”.
